Web Design Tips for Designing an Effective Website

Save Money by Learning to Design Your Own Website
Logo Design

A professional & effective website design is essential for inspiring trust & getting the interest of your site visitor.

Creating a great web site is much more than just slapping together a bit of HTML code & a few images. Depending on your website's topic or theme, it will need to successfully present & communicate your ideas clearly & in an interesting manner - it only has a few seconds in which to sell your site visitor.

A badly designed & unprofessional looking site won't do your reputation an good at all.

Whilst there may not be any hard and fast rules for a good design & many web design issues may be subjective, the following tips are what I consider to be essential ingredients that will contribute a professional & effective website.

6 Essential Tips for an Effective Website Design
  1. Page Size - Download Time & Speed

If your website does not load within a few seconds your site visitor will be clicking away without having seen your offering.

Ensure that the web page weight is kept as low as possible (the complete page should not exceed 30 KB) by keeping the HTML code clean, making use of external CSS files, elimination of unnecessary whitespace & comments and optimizing images.

  2. Accessibility - Use Clear & Consistant Navigation

Make use of navigation bars & menus on the top, right and the left of the page and ensure that their position look & feel is kept consistent on all pages so that your visitors can easily navigate their way around your site.

This will help to ensure that your information is accessible from all pages of your web site.

  3. Screen Resolutions

A good design will ensure that the website can be viewed properly in any screen resolution.

Whilst 800x600 screen resolutions are used by less than 8% of users these days they should still be accommodated for in your site's design.

A useful tip is to size fonts & other measurements in percentages & not in pixels which will render your site acceptable in any size resolution.

  4. Browser Compatibility

Your site also needs to render properly in differnet browsers - for instance it may look different in IE7 (Internet Explorer) than it does in Firefox or Netscape.

Generally proper coding fixes most quirks but there are also hacks that can be implemented in your code to correct certain positioning or other issues found in some browsers.

  5. Font, Size & Color

Please use a professional looking font at an appropriate size & color - for instance do not use some fancy font (like Comic Sans) in yellow on a black background.

To be safe use something like black verdana on a white background.

  6. Usability

Ensure that your site's design creates a user friendly experience for your visitors to have the perfect experience on your site, or at least one which results in them getting what they want.

"Web Usability" is found in websites that site visitors want to use, with the minimum amount of effort, time and frustration.

In conclusion, remember that if any one of the above web design tips are missing from your website's design it's performance in terms of its objectives will be impaired.
